A blog post by Yael, 13, Be'er Sheva
Hi everyone! Today I want to tell you about the biggest project of
my life so far: my very own model rocket. It took me three months to
build it, and it flew for exactly eleven seconds. Those were the best
eleven seconds of my year.
It all started last winter, when I watched a video of a real
rocket launch with my dad. I couldn't stop thinking about it. How does
something so heavy go up into space? Then my science teacher, Mrs.
Halabi, told me about a model rocket club that meets at the science
centre in our city on Tuesday evenings.
At the club, I was the only girl and the youngest member. At
first, I felt a bit out of place. But the instructor, Avi, gave me a
kit and said, "Ideas don't care how old you are." That sentence stayed
with me.
Building the rocket was harder than I expected. The body is a long
cardboard tube. I had to cut three plastic fins and glue them to the
bottom, so the rocket would fly straight. My first fins were not
straight at all, so I had to start again – twice! I also made a
parachute from an old plastic bag, so the rocket could come down
slowly. Finally, I painted it purple and silver and gave it a name:
Comet.
Launch day was a Friday morning in an open field outside the city.
We had to follow strict safety rules: everyone stood fifteen metres
away, and only Avi was allowed to press the launch button. My hands
were shaking. Avi counted down from ten, and then – whoosh! – Comet
shot into the sky. At the top, the parachute opened, and my rocket
floated gently back to the ground. Everybody clapped.
My advice to anyone who wants to try: don't be afraid of mistakes.
Every broken fin taught me something. Next time, I want to build a
rocket with a tiny camera inside. Stay tuned!
