For forty years, Elias Varga lived alone in a white lighthouse on
a small rocky island. Every evening, just before the sun went down, he
climbed the hundred and twelve steps to the top of the tower and lit
the great lamp. All night, its light turned slowly over the dark sea,
warning ships to stay away from the dangerous rocks.
It was not an easy life. A boat brought him food and letters once
every two weeks, but in winter, storms sometimes kept the boat away
for a month. Elias did not mind. He had his books, his radio and a
grey cat called Captain. In the mornings, he cleaned the glass of the
lamp until it shone, and in the afternoons he painted pictures of the
sea.
One stormy night in November, the electricity on the island
stopped working. The great lamp went dark. Elias looked out at the
black water and felt his heart beating fast. Far away, he could see
the lights of a small fishing boat. It was moving straight towards the
rocks.
There was no time to think. Elias ran down the stairs and found
the old oil lamps that he kept for emergencies. He carried them up,
one by one, and lit them all. Their light was weak, but it was enough.
Slowly, the fishing boat turned and moved away from the rocks.
A week later, a letter arrived. It was from the fisherman's
daughter, a girl named Mira. "My father says you saved his life," she
wrote. "Thank you. Do you ever feel lonely out there?" Elias read the
letter many times. Then he sat down and wrote a long answer. That was
the beginning of a friendship that lasted for years.
Today, the lighthouse works automatically, and nobody lives there
anymore. But in a small museum in the fishing village, you can still
see Elias's paintings of the sea. Next to them, in a glass box, there
is a pile of old letters, all addressed to Mira.
