by Daniel Mor, 16

Last summer I wanted to earn some money, so I looked for a job. I

am sixteen, and it is not easy to find work at my age. After two

weeks, I saw a sign in the window of an ice-cream shop near the beach

in Tel Aviv: "Help wanted for July and August." I went in and spoke to

the owner, a friendly woman called Gali. She asked me a few questions

and told me to come the next day.

The first days were really hard. I worked from four in the

afternoon until eleven at night. The shop was always full of people,

and they all wanted their ice cream fast. I had to remember more than

thirty flavours. Once I gave a customer chocolate instead of coffee,

and he was angry. I almost cried.

Slowly, things got easier. Gali taught me how to make a perfect

ball of ice cream and how to smile at customers even when I was tired.

I learned to count money quickly and to clean the machines at the end

of the night. My favourite part was giving children free tastes. They

always looked so happy.

I also made new friends. Two other teenagers worked with me, Omer

and Shira. We laughed a lot, and on our free evenings we went to the

beach together.

At the end of August, I had 6,000 shekels in the bank. I used some

of it to buy a new laptop. But the money was not the best thing. This

job taught me to work hard and to be patient with people. Next summer

I want to go back.
