An interview for the school newspaper

Esther Mizrahi is 73 years old and lives in Be'er Sheva. Three

years ago, she could not read or write. Today she reads a book every

month. Her grandson, Ido, 14, interviewed her for the school

newspaper.

Ido: Grandma, why didn't you learn to read when you were a child?

Esther: I grew up in a small village. My family was very poor, and

I was the oldest of eight children. I had to help my mother at home,

so I never went to school.

Ido: How did you live without reading?

Esther: It was difficult. I could not read letters from the bank

or the names of streets. I was always ashamed. I asked other people

for help, but I never told them the real reason.

Ido: What made you start at 70?

Esther: You did! When you were in second grade, you asked me to

read you a story. I said my eyes were tired. That night I cried. The

next week I joined a class for adults at the community centre.

Ido: Was it hard?

Esther: Very hard! At first the letters danced in front of my

eyes. But my teacher, Hila, was very patient. I practised every day at

the kitchen table, and sometimes you helped me with my homework.

Ido: What do you like to read now?

Esther: Everything! Newspapers, recipes and stories. But my

favourite moment was when I read a whole book to my youngest

grandchild.

Ido: What do you want to tell our readers?

Esther: It is never too late to learn. Don't be afraid to ask for

help.
