Ramot High School Newsletter
On Friday morning, 45 ninth graders from Ramot High School did not
go to class. Instead, they went to Palm Beach with bags, gloves and a
lot of energy. The students were part of a project called "Clean Sea,
Clean Future."
The idea came from Tamar Shapiro, a student in class 9B. In the
summer, she went swimming and saw a turtle with a plastic bag around
its neck. "I felt terrible," she says. "I wanted to do something." She
spoke to her science teacher, Mr. Golan, and together they planned the
clean-up.
The students worked in groups of five. Each group cleaned a
different part of the beach. They worked for four hours, and the sun
was very hot. At the end of the day, they had 120 bags of rubbish.
They found plastic bottles, bottle caps, old shoes and even a broken
chair. The most common thing was small pieces of plastic.
"It was hard work, but it was fun," said Yonatan, one of the
students. "We played music and sang while we worked. I didn't know
that a beach could be so dirty."
After the clean-up, the students went back to school and made a
big chart. It showed what kinds of rubbish they found. Mr. Golan
explained that plastic stays in the sea for hundreds of years and that
many sea animals eat it by mistake.
The project is not over. The students want to put signs on the
beach that ask people to take their rubbish home. They also plan to
clean the beach again in the spring. "This time," says Tamar, "we want
the whole school to come."
