Dear Mum and Dad,
I have been in Haifa for three weeks now, and I finally have time to
write you a long letter. I am sorry my messages have been so short! Every
day is full of new things.
My host family, the Avrahams, are wonderful. Ronit, the mother, is a
nurse, and Eyal, the father, teaches history. Their daughter, Noga, is in my
class, and she has become a real friend. They also have a cat called Pita,
which is the name of a kind of bread here. The family lives on Mount Carmel,
and from my bedroom window I can see the port and the sea. At night the
lights of the city look like stars.
School is very different from school at home. Students here call their
teachers by their first names, and they are much louder in class! At first I
was shocked, but now I understand that it is not rude. It is just the way
people talk. There is also no cleaning time at the end of the day like in
Japan. I miss that a little, because the classrooms are often messy.
The food is delicious, but it took me some time to get used to it.
People here eat a lot of vegetables, hummus and bread. On Friday evenings
the whole family sits together for a big dinner, and it lasts for hours.
Last week I made sushi for them. Eyal said it was the best meal of the
month, but I think he was just being kind.
The hardest thing is the language. Everyone speaks English with me, but
I want to learn some Hebrew. Noga is teaching me a new word every day.
Yesterday's word was "savlanut," which means patience. She says I will need
it here, especially on the roads!
Next week our class is going on a trip to the north, and I promise to
send photos. I miss you, and I miss Grandma's miso soup. Please give my
little sister Hana a big hug from me.
Love,
Yuki
