From the diary of Ido, grade 6
Sunday, 3 September. Today a new girl came to our class.
Her name is Camille, and she is from Lyon, a city in France.
Her family moved to Netanya last month because her father got
a new job here. Our teacher, Ms. Dahan, asked her to sit next
to me. Camille looked shy and a little scared. She didn't say
a word all morning.
At the break, I tried to talk to her in Hebrew, but she
didn't understand much. Then I asked, "Do you speak English?"
She smiled and said, "Yes, a little!" We talked in English
about our favourite food and music. She loves pizza, just like
me, and she plays the violin.
Tuesday, 5 September. Today Camille brought a box of small
French cakes to school. She called them madeleines. Everybody
wanted one, and they were delicious! At lunch, Camille taught
us to say "Good morning" in French: "Bonjour." Then we taught
her some Hebrew words. She wrote them in her notebook. Some
words sounded very funny when she said them, and we all
laughed together.
Thursday, 7 September. After school, Camille came to my
house, and we did our homework together. I helped her with
Hebrew, and she helped me with English. Before she went home,
she told me, "Last week I was sad, but now I have a friend
here." I think this was the best week of the year.
