From our class magazine
Sea turtles are very old animals. They lived at the time
of the dinosaurs, more than 100 million years ago. Today, two
kinds of sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches of Israel:
the green turtle and the loggerhead turtle.
In the summer, a mother turtle comes out of the sea at
night. She walks slowly on the sand, far from the water. Then
she digs a deep hole with her back flippers and lays about one
hundred eggs in it. The eggs are white and round, like
ping-pong balls. She covers them with sand and goes back to
the sea. She never sees her babies.
The eggs stay in the warm sand for about two months. At
night, the baby turtles come out of the eggs and walk to the
sea. It is a dangerous trip. Birds, crabs and foxes eat many
of them. Lights from hotels and roads are a problem too,
because the babies walk towards the lights and not towards the
sea.
Last summer, our class visited a beach near Haifa with a
guide from the Nature and Parks Authority. She showed us a
nest with a small fence around it. "We protect the nests, so
more babies can get to the sea," she explained. Then she gave
us three rules: don't use a flashlight on the beach at night,
don't leave rubbish on the sand, and never touch a baby
turtle.
