Text 1: Too Good to Throw Away
Around the world, about one third of all the food that people
produce is never eaten. It is lost on farms, during transport, in
shops or at home. At the same time, millions of people do not have
enough to eat. Wasted food is also bad for the planet. All the water,
energy and land used to grow it were used for nothing, and when food
rots in rubbish dumps, it gives off gases that make the Earth warmer.
Much of this waste happens in our own kitchens. We buy more than
we need, we forget food at the back of the fridge, or we throw it away
because it does not look perfect.
The good news is that small changes can help. Before you go
shopping, check what you already have and write a list. Keep older
food at the front of the fridge so you will see it first. Learn the
difference between "best before" and "use by": food is often still
fine after its "best before" date. Leftovers can become a new meal –
old bread, for example, makes excellent toast. And if you cook too
much, share it with a neighbour.
Text 2: A Letter to the Railway Company
Dear Customer Service Team, I am writing to complain about the
7:15 train from Northfield to Riverton on Monday, 12 May. I travel on
this train every day to get to college, and I usually arrive at 8:05,
in good time for my first class at 8:30.
On Monday, the train did not leave until 7:50. During that time,
nobody explained what the problem was. The screens on the platform
just said "delayed," and there was no announcement. When the train
finally left, it was so crowded that many passengers, including an old
woman with a walking stick, had to stand for the whole journey.
I arrived at 8:55 and missed an important exam. My teacher has
agreed to let me take it next week, but I had to bring a letter from
your company to show that the train was late. It took me two days to
get one.
This is the third delay this month. I would like my money back for
the ticket, and I hope that in the future you will give passengers
clear information.
Yours faithfully, Daniel Mor
