When my parents told me we were spending our summer holiday in Iceland,
I asked them if they had made a mistake. Who goes to a cold island near the
Arctic in July? Now that we are home, I can say it was the most amazing trip
of my life.
The first thing I noticed was the light. In summer, the sun in Iceland
sets very late and the sky never gets completely dark. On our first night in
Reykjavik, the capital, it was midnight and it looked like early evening
outside. I couldn't sleep at all until I bought an eye mask!
On the second day we drove the Golden Circle, a popular route that
starts and ends in Reykjavik. Our first stop was Thingvellir National Park,
where two of the Earth's tectonic plates are slowly moving apart. You can
actually walk in the valley between them. Next we saw Strokkur, a geyser
that shoots hot water high into the air every few minutes. Then we visited
Gullfoss, a waterfall so powerful that we got wet just standing near it.
Iceland has many volcanoes, and the heat under the ground is used to
heat most of the homes. One strange thing: in some places the hot water from
the tap smells a little like eggs. It's completely safe; it's just the
sulphur.
My favourite day was on the south coast. We walked on a beach with black
sand and watched puffins, small black-and-white birds with colourful beaks,
flying to their nests on the cliffs.
A few tips if you go: bring clothes for every kind of weather, because
it can change in minutes. And be ready to pay, because Iceland is very
expensive. A simple pizza cost us almost three times what it costs at home!
