By Hila Ben-David, 19
When I finished high school last June, all my friends were talking about
university or travelling. I decided to do something different first. I
signed up for a year of national service, or sherut leumi, and I was sent to
work in the children's ward of a hospital in Haifa.
I still remember my first morning. I was nervous, and I didn't know what
to do. The nurses were very busy, and nobody had time to explain anything to
me. I stood in the corridor for almost an hour. Then a little boy called
Noam, who was six, asked me to read him a story. I read him three books that
morning, and for the first time I felt useful.
Soon I had a routine. I started work at seven thirty. I helped to serve
breakfast, played games with the children and took them to the hospital
school. In the afternoons I sat with children whose parents had to work.
Some days were very hard. When a child was in pain, I couldn't help, and I
often cried on the bus home.
The year also changed me. Before national service, I was shy and I hated
speaking in front of people. At the hospital I had to talk to doctors,
parents and children every day, so I had no choice. By the end of the year I
was even giving short talks to new volunteers. I also learned to manage
money, because I lived in a flat with three other girls and we shared all
the bills.
Last week I visited the ward again. Noam is healthy now, and he ran to
hug me. In October I am going to start studying nursing. I am sure this year
was the best preparation I could have.
