Read the text and answer the questions in Parts A and B in English (70 points). Then write the composition in Part C (30 points). Answer in your own words if the question does not ask for words from the text. In the reading part, points are not taken off for grammar or spelling mistakes.
What is a mentor? A mentor is an older, more experienced person who
gives advice and support to a younger person. A mentor is not a teacher or a
parent. He or she is more like a guide who has already walked the same road
and can help you find your way.
Many schools and organisations run mentoring programmes for teenagers.
In a typical programme, a student meets a volunteer mentor, often a
university student or a working adult, for about an hour a week. They may do
homework together, talk about problems or make plans for the future. Some
pairs meet in person, while others talk online.
Lior Azulay, 17, joined a programme two years ago. At that time he was
failing maths and was thinking about leaving school. His mentor, Dana, was
an engineering student. "She never told me what to do," Lior remembers. "She
asked me questions until I found the answer myself." Today Lior's grades are
much better, and he wants to study engineering, like Dana.
Studies show that young people with mentors are more likely to finish
school and feel more confident about the future. Mentors gain something too.
Many of them say that the meetings make them more patient and help them see
their own lives in a new way.
However, mentoring needs time. Experts say that pairs who meet for a
year or more get the best results. When a mentor stops coming after a few
weeks, the young person can feel disappointed and even worse than before.
For this reason, most programmes ask mentors to promise to stay for at least
one school year.
If you would like a mentor, or if you want to become one, ask your
school counsellor about programmes in your area.
