A letter from a volunteer in Greece

Dear Grandma,

I'm sorry I haven't written for two weeks, but I've been very busy! As

you know, I'm volunteering for two months on a small island in Greece. I'm

part of a team that protects sea turtles. There are twenty volunteers here

from eleven different countries, and we live together in tents near the

beach.

Every summer, female turtles come out of the sea at night to lay their

eggs in the sand. Each one digs a hole, lays about a hundred eggs and goes

back to the water. Our job is to find these nests and protect them. We put a

small metal cage over each nest so that people don't walk on it or put their

beach umbrellas into it.

My day starts at five in the morning. We walk along the beach in pairs

and look for turtle tracks in the sand. It's hard to get up so early, but

the sunrise over the sea is wonderful. In the afternoons we talk to tourists

and explain why they must not leave chairs or rubbish on the beach at night.

Last night was the best night of my life. One of the nests began to

hatch! We watched about eighty tiny turtles climb out of the sand and walk

towards the sea. Baby turtles find the water by following the light of the

moon on the waves, so we had to turn off all our torches. A few of them went

the wrong way, towards the lights of a hotel, and we carried them gently

back.

I've learned so much here, and not only about turtles. I'm cooking for

twenty people, and my English is getting better every day.

I'll be home on 3rd September. Please tell Grandpa I miss his coffee!

Lots of love,

Noa
