Exhibition review: "Tiny Cities" at the Harbour Art Centre, Haifa

If you have ever looked at a city from a plane and thought that

everything looked like toys, then "Tiny Cities", the new exhibition at the

Harbour Art Centre, is for you. The exhibition shows the work of twelve

artists from around the world who build miniature models of real and

imaginary places.

The first room is the most impressive. In the centre stands a model of

an old neighbourhood in Jaffa, built at one-hundredth of its real size.

Every detail is there: washing hanging from the balconies, cats sleeping on

the steps, even a tiny bakery with loaves of bread in the window. The

artist, Miriam Asaf, spent three years on the project, and she used

photographs from her grandparents' albums to make sure everything was

accurate.

Other works are less realistic and more playful. A Japanese artist has

built a whole city inside an old suitcase, with streets that light up when

you open it. Another artist uses only recycled materials, such as bottle

tops, broken phones and food packaging, to create skyscrapers. These works

are clever and fun, and they made me think about how much we throw away

every day.

The final room is the most serious. Here, models show what coastal

cities might look like if sea levels continue to rise. Water covers the

lower streets, and people move around in boats. The message is clear,

perhaps too clear: the explanations on the walls repeat the same warning

again and again, and I felt that the models could have spoken for

themselves.

The exhibition is very well organised for families. Children receive a

small magnifying glass at the entrance, and there are hidden objects to find

in every model. On the day I visited, groups of children were running from

room to room, shouting whenever they found a hidden mouse or a tiny

astronaut.

My main criticism is the space itself. The rooms are quite narrow, and

on a busy afternoon it was difficult to get close to the models. Visitors

who want to look at the details calmly should come early in the morning,

when it is quieter.

Overall, "Tiny Cities" is a delightful and thoughtful exhibition that

proves that small things can carry big ideas. I would give it four stars out

of five. The exhibition runs until the end of March, and tickets for

students cost 25 shekels.
