יש לקרוא את שני הטקסטים ולענות באנגלית על השאלות שאחרי כל טקסט. על טעויות בדקדוק או בכתיב לא מורידים נקודות, כל עוד התשובה ברורה.
Read the two texts and answer the questions that follow each text, in English. Points are not taken off for grammar or spelling mistakes, as long as the answer is clear.
Text 1: A Short History of Chocolate
Chocolate is one of the most popular sweets in the world, but for
most of its history, people did not eat it. They drank it! Chocolate
comes from the seeds of the cacao tree, which grows in hot, wet places
near the equator.
More than 3,000 years ago, people in Mexico and Central America
already made a drink from cacao seeds. Later, the Maya and the Aztecs
drank it too. Their chocolate drink was not sweet. It was bitter, and
they often added chili to it. The Aztecs believed that cacao was a
gift from the gods, and they even used cacao seeds as money.
In the 1500s, Spanish travellers brought cacao to Europe. There,
people added sugar and drank it hot. For many years, only rich people
could buy it.
Solid chocolate came much later. In 1847, a British company made
one of the first chocolate bars. In 1875, a Swiss man, Daniel Peter,
made the first milk chocolate. Today, most cacao comes from West
Africa, and the world eats millions of tonnes of chocolate every year.
Text 2: The Corridor: Our School Newspaper
Once a month, students at Ramot Hills High School find a new copy
of The Corridor on their desks. The Corridor is the school newspaper,
and fourteen students from grades 9 to 12 write it.
The team meets every Wednesday during the long break, and they
choose the topics together. There are always news stories about the
school, interviews with teachers, a sports page and a page of jokes
and puzzles. This year, they added a new section, "Ask Rina." Students
send questions about problems with friends or homework, and the school
counsellor, Rina, answers them.
The editor, Yonatan, is in grade 12. "My job is to check every
article before we print it," he explains. "We want our news to be
correct and fair."
The newspaper is printed on recycled paper, and there is also an
online version. Last year, The Corridor won second prize in a national
competition for school newspapers. Now the team hopes to win first
prize.
