A personal account by Noam, 17

For months, I had dreamed about my first driving lesson. I had passed

the theory test soon after my seventeenth birthday, and I was sure that

driving would be easy. After all, I had watched my parents drive for years.

How hard could it be?

My teacher, Shlomo, arrived at seven in the morning in a small white car

with a big sign on the roof. He was about sixty, with grey hair and a calm

voice. "Before we go anywhere," he said, "we check everything." For fifteen

minutes, he showed me how to move the seat and the mirrors, how to put on my

seat belt properly and where to hold the wheel: hands at ten and two, like

the numbers on a clock.

Then he told me to start the engine. My hands were shaking. The car had

a second set of pedals on Shlomo's side, so he could stop it if I made a

mistake, but that did not make me feel much better. When I finally pressed

the gas pedal, the car jumped forward, and I hit the brake so hard that we

both flew towards the windscreen.

Shlomo laughed. "Everybody does that the first time," he said. "Gently.

Imagine there is an egg under your foot." We spent the rest of the lesson in

an empty car park, driving slowly in circles, stopping and starting again.

By the end, I could drive in a straight line without jumping.

When I got home, my mother asked me how it went. "Terrible," I said, and

then I smiled. "But I can't wait for next week." I learned that driving is

not easy, and that watching someone do something is very different from

doing it yourself.
