Some films are loud, fast and full of special effects. The Silent
Station is not one of them. This quiet, beautiful film by the young director
Tali Shamir is the surprise of the summer, and it proves that a good story
is more important than a big budget.
The film tells the story of Lena, a fourteen-year-old girl from Tel Aviv
whose father accepts a job at a weather station on a small island in the far
north of Norway. There is no internet, no school and no other teenagers –
only her father, an old scientist named Henrik and a lot of snow. At first,
Lena is angry and lonely, and she counts the days until she can go home. But
when she finds an injured fox near the station and decides to look after it,
her life slowly begins to change.
Newcomer Roni Gal, who plays Lena, is wonderful. She says very little in
the first half of the film, but her face tells us everything she feels. Her
scenes with Henrik, played by the experienced actor Erik Holm, are both
funny and moving. The fox, by the way, is real: the film-makers worked with
trained animals for more than a year.
The photography is another reason to see this film. The long, empty
landscapes and the green northern lights in the night sky are breathtaking,
especially on a big screen. The music, mostly a single piano, matches the
cold, lonely mood perfectly.
The film is not perfect, however. The middle part is too slow, and a
storm scene near the end is a little predictable – most viewers will guess
what happens long before it does. Some younger viewers may also find the
ending, which I will not reveal here, quite sad.
Still, The Silent Station is a film about growing up, finding friends in
unexpected places and learning to enjoy silence in a noisy world. It is
suitable for ages ten and up. Go and see it, and bring tissues: you will be
thinking about Lena and her fox for days. Four stars out of five.
