A report by the student council of Givat Oren High School

Many adults believe that teenagers have stopped reading. To find out if

this is true, our student council carried out a survey in March. A total of

412 students in grades 7 to 12 answered twenty questions about their reading

habits. Here are the main findings.

The good news first: most students still read for pleasure. 64% said

that they had read at least one book in the last three months that was not

for school. Girls read more than boys: 72% of the girls, compared with 55%

of the boys. The most popular kinds of books were fantasy, graphic novels

and books about sport.

However, reading drops as students get older. In grade 7, students read

for pleasure for an average of 35 minutes a day. In grade 12, the average

was only 12 minutes. When we asked older students why, the most common

answer was "no time" – because of homework, exams and part-time jobs. The

second most common answer was their phones: 48% said that they often start

reading but stop to check messages.

The survey also showed a change in how students read. Only 30% of the

readers prefer printed books, while 41% read on their phones or tablets and

29% listen to audiobooks, often on the bus or while exercising. "For me, an

audiobook counts as reading," one grade 11 student wrote. "I finish two

books a month that way."

Finally, we asked what would encourage students to read more. The most

popular ideas were a quiet reading corner in the library with comfortable

chairs, a school book club, and fifteen minutes of free reading at the start

of the school day.

Based on these results, the student council recommends three steps.

First, the library should stay open during the long break and after school.

Second, the school should start a monthly book club where students choose

the books. Third, teachers should accept audiobooks and e-books in reading

projects. We will present these ideas to the principal next month. We hope

that next year's survey will show that more students are reading for fun.
