A personal account by Noa, Grade 7

Last week, our whole class went on a two-day trip to the Negev. We

left at six in the morning, and most of us slept on the bus. When I

woke up, I looked out of the window. Everything was brown and yellow.

There were no trees, only rocks and sand. My friend Tamar said, "It

looks like the moon!"

Our guide, Eli, met us in Mitzpe Ramon. He showed us the Ramon

Crater. It is about 40 kilometres long, and it is not really a crater

at all. Eli explained that water and wind made it over millions of

years. I was surprised. I always thought a rock from space made it.

Then we started walking. The sun was hot, and Eli told us to drink

water every fifteen minutes, even when we were not thirsty. "In the

desert, you lose water without feeling it," he said. Some kids

complained, but they listened. On the way, we saw two ibexes on a high

rock. They did not run away. They just looked at us, and we looked at

them.

At night, we slept in a Bedouin tent. Our hosts gave us sweet tea

and warm pita. After dinner, Eli turned off all the lights. I looked

up and could not believe my eyes. I have never seen so many stars. In

Tel Aviv, you can only see a few.

The second day was harder. We climbed a steep path, and my legs

hurt. I wanted to stop, but Tamar held my hand and said, "Only ten

more minutes." She was right. From the top, we could see the whole

crater. I felt tired, but proud. Next year, I want to go back with my

family.
