An email from Daniel to his cousin Ben

Hi Ben,

How is life in London? I hope your football team is winning. I

have some exciting news. Every Friday morning, I now volunteer at an

animal shelter near my house in Haifa. My mum found it online. She

said it was a good way to do something useful, and I agreed, because I

love animals.

The shelter is home to about sixty dogs and forty cats. Most of

them were found in the street. Some were left by their owners, and

that makes me really sad. The workers there give them food, medicine

and a lot of love until a new family adopts them.

On my first day, I was a little nervous. The dogs were barking

very loudly, and I did not know what to do. Rina, the manager, gave me

easy jobs first. I cleaned the water bowls and filled them again.

After an hour, she let me walk a dog called Pilpel. He is small and

black, with one white ear. He pulled me all the way to the park!

Now I go every week. My favourite job is playing with the puppies,

but I also have to clean the cages. That part is not much fun, I have

to say. The best day was last Friday, when a young couple came and

adopted Pilpel. I was happy for him, but I also cried a little when he

left.

Rina says the shelter always needs more volunteers. Maybe when you

visit us in the summer, you can come with me? I promise I will give

you the cage-cleaning job!

Write soon,

Daniel
