Omer was twelve years old, and he had a secret. He could not swim.

Every summer, his friends went to the beach and jumped into the waves,

but Omer always found an excuse. "I have a headache," he said, or "I

forgot my swimsuit." The truth was that he was afraid of the water.

It started when he was six. At a hotel pool, he fell into the deep

end. His father pulled him out after a few seconds, but Omer never

forgot the feeling. Water came into his nose and mouth, and he could

not breathe. Since then, even a bath made him nervous.

In September, his school announced swimming lessons for all

seventh graders. Omer felt sick. He thought about telling his teacher

he was ill. But his grandmother, Savta Rachel, had other ideas. "You

know," she said, "I learned to swim when I was fifty-five. If I can do

it, you can do it too."

The teacher, Gil, was patient. On the first day, he did not ask

Omer to swim at all. They just sat on the steps of the pool with their

feet in the water. The next week, Omer put his face in the water and

blew bubbles. It felt silly, but it helped. Slowly, he learned to

float on his back while Gil held him.

After two months, Gil took his hands away. Omer did not notice at

first. He was floating alone! He laughed so hard that he almost

swallowed some water.

In June, the class had a swimming competition. Omer did not win,

but he swam the whole length of the pool. When he got out, Savta

Rachel was waiting with a towel and a big smile.
