When you think about bees, maybe you think about honey, or maybe
you remember a painful sting. But honeybees do much more than make
honey. Without them, the food on our plates would look very different.
Honeybees live in large groups called colonies. In summer, one
colony can have up to 60,000 bees. Each colony has one queen. Her only
job is to lay eggs – up to 2,000 a day. Almost all the other bees are
workers, and all the workers are female. They collect food, clean the
hive, take care of the young bees and protect their home.
The most important job of the bees happens outside the hive. When
a bee visits a flower, she drinks a sweet liquid called nectar. At the
same time, a yellow powder called pollen sticks to her body. When she
flies to the next flower, some of the pollen falls off. This helps the
plant make fruit and seeds. Scientists say that about one in every
three bites of our food depends on bees and other insects, for example
apples, almonds and cucumbers.
Bees are also very good at communication. When a worker finds a
field full of flowers, she flies back to the hive and does a special
dance. The dance tells the other bees which way to fly and how far to
go.
Unfortunately, bees are in danger in many parts of the world. Some
chemicals that farmers use on plants can kill them. Diseases and the
loss of wild flowers are also a big problem. But you can help, too.
Plant flowers on your balcony or in your garden, and never kill a bee
that comes near you. Just stay calm, and she will fly away.
