An interview from our school newspaper
A year ago, Chloé Azoulay, 14, moved with her family from Lyon,
France, to Netanya. Today she is in the eighth grade at our school.
Our reporter, Itai Levi, asked her about her first months in Israel.
Itai: Why did your family decide to make aliyah?
Chloé: My parents talked about it for years. My grandparents moved
to Israel in 2015, and my mother missed them a lot. Also, my father is
an engineer, and he found a good job in a high-tech company here.
Itai: How did you feel about the move?
Chloé: I was angry at first. I had to leave my best friend, Inès,
and my dance class. I cried on the plane. But I was also curious. I
had visited Israel on holidays, and I loved the beach.
Itai: What was the hardest thing at school?
Chloé: The language, of course. I knew some Hebrew words from
summer camp, but in class the teachers spoke so fast! In maths, I
understood the numbers but not the questions. For the first three
months, I went to an ulpan class every morning, and it helped a lot.
Another surprise was how informal Israeli students are. Here,
everybody calls the teachers by their first names. In France, I would
never do that!
Itai: How did you make new friends?
Chloé: At the beginning, I sat alone during the breaks. Then a
girl in my class, Shira, invited me to join the school basketball
team. I was terrible at basketball, but the girls didn't care. After
practice, we went for ice cream, and they taught me Hebrew slang. Now
Shira is my best friend here.
Itai: Do you have any advice for new olim?
Chloé: Be patient with yourself. Don't be afraid to make mistakes
when you speak – people here really want to help. And keep in touch
with your old friends. I still talk to Inès every Sunday, and she is
coming to visit me in the summer!
