How I started my own baking business – a blog post
Hi everyone! My name is Lia, I'm fifteen, and I live in Modi'in. This is
my first blog post, so I want to tell you how a hobby became a small
business.
It all started during the summer holidays last year. I was bored, so I
began baking cookies with my grandmother's old recipe book. My family loved
them, and soon my parents' friends were asking for them too. One day, our
neighbour asked if she could order forty cookies for her son's birthday
party. She paid me 120 shekels. That was the moment I thought, "Maybe I can
do this for real."
Of course, starting a business at fifteen is not simple. First, I had to
talk to my parents. They agreed, but they had three rules: school comes
first, I must keep the kitchen clean, and I can only bake on weekends. Then
I needed money for ingredients and boxes. My dad lent me 500 shekels, and I
promised to pay him back in three months. (I did it in two!)
Next, I opened an Instagram page called "Lia's Kitchen." I took photos
of my cookies and brownies in natural light near the window, because my
friend said it makes food look better. She was right. In the first month I
got twelve orders, mostly from people in my neighbourhood.
Not everything went well. Once I burned a whole tray of brownies an hour
before a customer came to collect them. I had to bake everything again very
fast, and I was almost late. Another time, I forgot to write down an order,
and a customer waited for nothing. I felt awful, so I gave her a free box.
Now I keep a notebook with every order and its date.
Today I bake about sixty cookies every Friday. I've saved enough money
for a new mixer, and I'm planning to try cakes for the holidays. My advice
to other teens? Start small, be honest with your customers and don't be
afraid of mistakes. I made plenty, and I learned something from every one of
them.
