How street art changed one street
Two years ago, Hadar Street in the Neve Shalev neighbourhood was a place
people tried to avoid. The buildings were grey, many shops were empty, and
the walls were covered with ugly graffiti. Today, tourists come with
cameras, and the local café has a queue every weekend. What changed? The
answer is paint – a lot of paint.
The project began with Michal Dagan, a 34-year-old artist who grew up on
the street. She asked the local council for permission to paint a large
mural on the side of an old building. The council agreed, but only if the
residents also wanted it. Michal knocked on every door. Some people were
excited, but others were against the idea. "One old man told me that paint
would not fix the broken pipes in his building," she remembers. "He was
right, of course. But I believed art could bring people together."
The first mural shows the faces of people who live on the street – the
baker, the postman, children from the local school and the old man himself,
who finally agreed to take part. It took three weeks to finish. Neighbours
brought Michal coffee and food, and teenagers helped her with the background
colours. Soon other artists asked to join. Today there are fourteen murals
on Hadar Street.
The change has been bigger than anyone expected. Three new shops have
opened, and the council has repaired the pavements and added street lights.
"People walk here at night now," says Rafi Cohen, who has owned the corner
shop for thirty years. "Before, I closed at six because I was afraid."
However, not everyone is happy. Some residents worry that the street is
becoming too popular. Rents have already gone up, and a few young families
say they can no longer afford to live there. "We don't want our
neighbourhood to become a museum," says one mother.
Michal understands these worries. She is now working with the council on
a plan to keep rents fair. "Art should help the people who live here," she
says, "not push them away."
