Every autumn, the sky above northern Israel fills with a sound that is

hard to forget: the loud, trumpet-like calls of thousands of cranes. These

tall grey birds are on one of the longest journeys in the animal world, and

many of them stop to rest in the Hula Valley.

The common crane is an impressive bird. It stands about 1.2 metres tall

and has a wingspan of around two metres. In spring and summer, cranes live

and raise their young in northern Europe and Russia, in countries such as

Finland. When the weather there turns cold, they fly south to spend the

winter in warmer places, mainly in Africa. Israel lies right on their route,

where three continents meet. That is why it is one of the most important

places in the world for bird migration: hundreds of millions of birds of

many kinds fly over the country every year.

For the cranes, the Hula Valley is a perfect stop. It has shallow water

where they can stand safely at night, and wide open fields where they can

find food. Some of the birds rest for a few days and then continue to

Africa. Others decide that the journey is long enough and stay in the valley

for the whole winter. In recent years, tens of thousands of cranes have

spent the winter there.

This success created a problem. Hungry cranes began to eat the crops in

the farmers' fields, such as peanuts and chickpeas, and the farmers lost a

lot of money. Some tried to frighten the birds away, but the cranes simply

moved to the next field. In the end, a creative solution was found: every

day during the winter, workers spread corn in one special area for the

cranes to eat. With free food in one place, most of the birds leave the

farmers' fields alone. Farmers, nature lovers and the authorities worked

together to make this plan possible.

The cranes also brought something positive to the region: tourists.

Visitors come from Israel and abroad to see the birds, especially at

sunrise, when thousands of cranes take off together. Some visitors ride in a

special covered wagon that drives slowly into the fields. The birds are used

to it, so people can get very close without scaring them away.

At the end of winter, around February and March, the cranes begin their

long flight back north to raise a new generation. The story of the Hula

Valley shows that people and wild animals can share the same land, if they

are ready to look for solutions together.
