An interview with a young team captain

Last month, the robotics team of Oranim High School came second out of

more than forty teams in a national competition. We spoke to the team

captain, fifteen-year-old Shir Ben-David, about robots, failure and

teamwork.

Q: How did you get into robotics?

Shir: Honestly, by accident. In eighth grade, a friend dragged me to an

after-school meeting because she didn't want to go alone. I thought robotics

was only for boys who love computers, and I was neither. But when I saw a

robot that the older students had built pick up a ball and throw it into a

basket, I was hooked. My friend left after a month. I stayed.

Q: What did the competition involve?

Shir: Every year the organisers announce a new challenge in January, and

teams have about six weeks to design and build a robot. This year the robot

had to move around a field, collect plastic rings and place them on poles of

different heights. Teams play in groups of three, so you work together with

robots from other schools against another group. That means you have to

cooperate even with your competitors.

Q: What was your job?

Shir: As captain, I mostly made sure everyone could do their part. We

had twenty-two students: programmers, builders, people who designed parts on

the computer, and a marketing group that found sponsors. I also drove the

robot during matches, which is incredibly stressful. Your hands are shaking,

the crowd is screaming, and you have just two and a half minutes.

Q: Was there a moment when you wanted to give up?

Shir: Definitely. Two days before the competition, our robot's arm

stopped working during a test. A motor had burned out, and we didn't have a

spare one. Some of the younger students were in tears. Then a team from

another city heard about our problem on social media and drove two hours to

bring us their extra motor. We worked until midnight, and the robot was

ready the next morning. I'll never forget that.

Q: What have you learned?

Shir: That failure is part of the process. Our robot failed hundreds of

times before it worked, and every time something broke, we learned why. I've

also learned that you don't need to be a genius to be an engineer. You need

curiosity and patience.

Q: What's next?

Shir: Next year I'll help train the new members, because older students

once did the same for me. And one day I'd like to study engineering. Maybe

I'll build robots that help people in hospitals.
