How a high-school student turned her own problem into a free tutoring programme
Three years ago, Yael Shani was failing maths. "I was in eighth grade,
and I simply didn't understand anything," she remembers. "I felt stupid, and
I started to hate school." Her parents could not afford a private tutor.
Then a neighbour, a university student named Ido, offered to help her for
free. Every Tuesday evening they sat together at the kitchen table. By the
end of the year, Yael's grade had gone up from 48 to 85.
Last year, at sixteen, Yael decided it was time to give something back.
She asked the local library if she could use its study room twice a week,
and she put up notes at school asking for volunteers. On the first evening,
three tutors and five children came. Today the programme, called "Table
Seven" after the library table where it started, has more than forty tutors
and over a hundred pupils from grades four to nine.
The tutors are all high-school students. Many join as part of their
school's personal commitment programme. "At first I came just for the
hours," admits Amir, 16. "But when a boy I was helping got his first 100 in
English, I was as happy as he was."
It has not always been easy. Some parents worried that teenagers could
not teach properly, so Yael created a short training course for new tutors
with the help of two retired teachers. She also made one clear rule: tutors
never do homework for the children. "Our job is to explain, not to give
answers," she says.
Yael hopes to open Table Seven in two more towns. "Everyone gets stuck
sometimes," she says. "The difference is whether someone sits down next to
you."
